Sir Ken Robinson on Education

"Our education system has mined our minds in the way that we strip mine the earth for a particular commodity."

Cameron,

Thanks for posting this excellent talk. He quite accurately points out that our education system is geared primarily toward turning out good workers, not maximizing the potential of our children, particularly in the arts.

Of course, this situation is unlikely to improve unless we fund education at the levels required to provide those opportunities, not just for the children of privilege, but for all. We never know which child will become the next brilliant brain surgeon, or ballet dancer, or novelist - we need to give them all the opportunity to learn.

I absolutely loved this ted talk when I first saw it a couple of years ago. I've looked at it since then from time to time just to remind myself the importance of finding genius in everyone. As a homeschooling mom, this is a particularly salient message for me.

I'm not sure that funding will do all that much if we continue to "strip mine our minds".

This talk was about how we educate our children, and what we prepare them for. Funding is important, but that's not really what Robinson is talking about.
