I mean, aren't the olympics meant to transcend all the ugliness? We can't forget about human rights violations, but can't we set sins aside for a couple of weeks and celebrate cooperation and the beauty of human diversity and accomplishment?
Sure, except that the Olympics are often used as a means of glossing over the bad and legitimizing pretty crappy governments and government actions. Why is there a need to change if the world already accepts what the Chinese government is and does?
