Nancy Pelosi on Iraq Withdrawal

Have you ever noticed how politicians seem to talk alot? But that in all that talking not really say anything? Case in point, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi was asked by Bob Schieffer on Face the Nation what would happen to Iraq if the US were to follow her plan to withdraw in the next 4-6 months. Her reply used up 443 words by my count, but not one of them answered the question. Mr. Schieffer had to ask and re-ask the same question 4 times, and Speaker Pelosi used 443 words to say absolutely nothing.

Why not, I wonder?

Hey, she's a politician! She's also not a fortune teller nor is she an expert on the Middle East or Iraq, so if you wanted to know what would happen if the US were to withdraw in 4-6 months you should check with Juan Cole, not Nancy Pelosi.

Of course, if you leave US troops there more or less indefinitely as Bush proposes, we can be pretty sure that a year from now things will not have changed much. Maybe Bob Schieffer will get the chance to ask his good buddy GW that one.

No offense, but I don't think that being a politician should be an excuse for not knowing something. I would assume that Ms. Pelosi would at least know something about Iraq and its chances for success were the US to leave immediately as she proposes. Perhaps as an elected official advocating a certain policy, we as the people she is supposed to be representing could have the hope that she is informed, at least a little anyway.

The point of leaving Iraq is not to do any further damage, either to Iraq or to our own Armed Forces. Ultimately, whether the US is there or not, the Iraqis have to work out their own issues. Having an occupation army and a puppet government is simply not helpful to that process.

Will they be successful if we leave? Who knows. Will they be successful if we don't? Probably not. If we leave soon, will we lose fewer of our brave soldiers? Yes, absolutely. This is a no-brainer.
